Presbyopia

Presbyopia is a condition where a person experiences a gradual loss of their eyes’ ability to focus on nearby objects. It is a natural condition, often related to aging, and becomes noticeable in the early to mid-40s and continues to worsen as you age until age 65. This condition usually becomes more apparent when reading books, and you start to hold them at arm’s length away to read. Presbyopia can be corrected with eyeglasses or contact lenses and, in more extreme cases, can be corrected with surgery.

If you are experiencing blurry vision when reading, schedule an appointment with an optometrist on our team for presbyopia treatment. Our eye care team at Broadway Eye Clinic in Salt Lake City, UT, is dedicated to helping patients with all their vision conditions, including presbyopia.

Symptoms of Presbyopia

Since presbyopia develops gradually, it might not be easy to notice the symptoms until after 40. However, common symptoms of the condition may include holding reading material farther away, blurred vision at typical reading distances, headaches, eyestrain, and tiredness after reading. Symptoms may intensify after reading in dim lighting or while tired.

When to See an Eye Doctor

You should see an eye doctor when you have trouble reading, doing close-up work, or stopping doing normal activities you once enjoyed. An optometrist on our team can identify if you have presbyopia and advise you of your options.

Presbyopia Risk Factors

Some people are at a higher risk of developing presbyopia than others. Some risk factors for presbyopia may include age, medical conditions, and medications. It is best to speak with an optometrist to learn more about presbyopia risk factors and if you are potentially at risk of developing this eye condition. Visit us to get an eye exam. We can help you determine if you have presbyopia or another eye condition.

Presbyopia Treatment Options

We now have excellent technology available to treat presbyopia! Multifocal contact lenses are growing in popularity to allow you clear and comfortable vision at all distances without having to wear glasses.  We also offer the newest and best technology in progressive lenses and computer lenses when it comes to glasses.  Ask our eye doctor which choice is best for you!  Many of our patients enjoy wearing progressive glasses and have the option to wear multifocal contact lenses for more active activities like hiking or skiing.  You don't have to choose, you can have both depending on your lifestyle needs!
