Age Related Macular Degeneration

Utah has some of the most sought-after sights to see on the planet. Our national parks are unparalleled, and people travel from across the globe to see them. Unfortunately, the ability to take in these sights can diminish as we age. Many will face AMD, or age-related macular degeneration. AMD can greatly impact the quality of life in older Americans, but what can be done about it? What are its causes, and what treatments can help slow its progress? Is there a cure? At Broadway Eye Clinic in Salt Lake City, we address vision issues for patients of all ages, including those that come to light as we age, like AMD.

What Is It?

Age-related macular degeneration is a vision problem that affects the macula, the central part of the retina. This is the part that helps provide sharp central vision. As the disease progresses, your vision gets worse.

At What Age Does Age-Related Macular Degeneration Become Problematic?

Age-related macular degeneration can begin impacting adults at about the age of 50 and can increase in severity through the 60s.

Other Than Age, What Factors Can Impact Age-Related Macular Degeneration?

Many factors can impact age-related macular degeneration, including genetics. Yes, if AMD has been an issue in your family, you could be at higher risk of developing AMD. Caucasians of European descent may have a higher risk of AMD as well. If you smoke, you may also be more likely to be impacted by AMD. A poor diet that lacks nutrients and antioxidants can also contribute to AMD. Many of those who suffer from AMD also have been shown to have high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, and/or heart disease.

What is the Most Common Form of AMD?

What is known as Dry AMD or neovascular AMD is the most common form of the malady, accounting for about 90 percent of cases.

Is There a Cure?

While there is no current known cure, there are treatment options available that can minimize its impact and slow its progression. These can include photodynamic and laser treatments.
