Binocular Vision

Your eyes need to work together to see clearly. If your eyes cannot properly communicate, it could cause binocular vision problems. At Broadway Eye Clinic in Salt Lake City, UT, you can talk to an optometrist about issues with binocular vision and find a suitable treatment.

Binocular Vision Problems

While there are different types of binocular vision problems and disorders, many of these conditions cause similar symptoms. Some of the most common symptoms include blurry eyes and eye strain. Common binocular vision disorders include:

Vergence Disorders

Vergence disorders affect the combined visual output from your eyes. There are two main types of vergence disorders. Convergence insufficiency can make it difficult for the eyes to turn inward, while convergence excess causes the eyes to bend too far inward.

Vertical Heterophoria

This binocular vision disorder causes one eye to drift upward while focusing on an object. It may occur because the eyes aren't correctly aligned. The condition can cause various symptoms, including chronic migraines and vertigo.

Strabismus

Frequently referred to as "crossed eyes," this condition causes an eye to focus inward or outward while the other eye stays focused. If untreated, it can lead to the development of another binocular vision disorder known as amblyopia.

Amblyopia

Commonly referred to as a lazy eye, this condition occurs when one eye is weaker than the other. Like strabismus, it can cause one or both eyes to drift inward or outward.

Signs of Binocular Vision Problems

Any issues with binocular vision can result in numerous symptoms. You should talk to an eye doctor if you've experienced any of the following symptoms:

  • Difficulty driving
  • Chronic headaches
  • Double vision
  • Frequent motion sickness
  • Difficulty reading
  • Dizziness
  • Sensitivity to light

While these symptoms can be indicators of issues with binocular vision, they can also be signs of other vision problems. If you've shown these symptoms, your optometrist can examine your eyes and diagnose the problem.

If you have a binocular vision disorder, you may show additional symptoms that are more severe. In some cases, it's unable to move one or both of your eyes in a specific direction. You may also notice that one eye is visibly turning inward or outward.

How Eye Care Can Help

While binocular vision problems can make it difficult to see clearly, these conditions can be treated with the help of an eye doctor. Eye exercises and other treatments can strengthen the connection between the brain and the eye, improving vision problems.
