If you have refractive errors in your vision, prescription eyeglasses and contact lenses aren't your only options for improving your sight. LASIK surgery can provide clearer vision. After evaluating your eye health and vision, one of our optometrists at Broadway Eye Clinic can determine if LASIK is a good fit for you.

How LASIK Works

The human eye is composed of various parts that work together to produce quality sight. The cornea's function is to refract or bend light onto the retina, resulting in clear vision. For light to be refracted equally, the cornea should be round. However, a misshapen cornea can cause light to bend improperly, leading to vision refractions. LASIK surgery allows your eye doctor to reshape the cornea, enabling light to bend onto the retina equally and provide optimal sight.

Are You a Good Candidate for LASIK?

To ensure the success of LASIK surgery, certain requirements must be met. Firstly, the cornea must have sufficient thickness for reshaping. Additionally, the severity of your vision problems should be within a range that LASIK can effectively correct.

LASIK candidates must be at least 18 years old and have a stable prescription for at least one year prior to the surgery. Pregnant and nursing mothers are not suitable candidates for LASIK, as hormonal changes during pregnancy and breastfeeding can cause vision fluctuations.

Other factors to consider include:

1. Eye health: You must be free of any eye conditions, disorders, or diseases that could complicate the surgery.

2. General health: Good overall health is necessary, as certain health issues or medications can affect the surgery's outcome or prolong the recovery period. If you have conditions like diabetes, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, or other autoimmune diseases, your eye doctor will not recommend LASIK.
