Myopia Control in Kids

An optometrist is a doctor that specializes in eye care. Your eyes are sensitive to certain lights and diseases. Broadway Eye Clinic in Salt Lake City focuses on diseases that damage the eyes and provides alternative treatments to restore your vision. Children with myopia might not know how to describe their symptoms, which is why it is important to schedule regular eye exams. Our eye doctor will assess your condition to determine whether or not you are suffering from myopia and recommend treatment accordingly.

What is Myopia?

Myopia is a refractive error that causes distant objects to appear blurry. Myopia can come on suddenly, or it can develop gradually. It is also heredity. Myopia occurs when light cannot enter the retina. When you bring your child in for an eye exam, we perform all the necessary exams and tests to make sure we provide the best treatment available.

How is Myopia Detected?

33 percent of children over the age of 12 years old suffer from Myopia. The disease is detected by using a diopter unit. The diopter unit is used to measure the focusing power of the prescription lenses. A negative number indicates Myopia. However, the higher the negative diopter number, the thicker the lenses need to be, to be effective.

How Does an Eye Doctor Treat Myopia?

An optometrist may treat Myopia with one of several treatment options. Contact lenses, corrective eyeglasses, or refractive surgery are most common in treating Myopia. Refractive surgery is not favorable for children, but it is suitable for adults.
